Why is China manufacturing organised by city?

Factories making the same product, their component suppliers and a wholesale market tend to share one town. Datang, a sub-district of Zhuji in Zhejiang, makes about 25 billion pairs of socks a year, one third of world output according to Xinhua (2024). Yangjiang produces more than 75 percent of China's knives and scissors (China Daily, 2024). For a buyer, the cluster is where one trip lets you compare the most factories for one product.

Yiwu market: what is it and who is it for?

Yiwu International Trade Market houses nearly 80,000 booths offering more than 2.1 million types of commodities and trades with 233 countries and regions (Xinhua, January 2026). It suits buyers who mix many low-value products in one container. Its trade show, the China Yiwu International Commodities Fair, held its 32nd edition from 21 to 24 October 2026. In the north, Linyi in Shandong plays a similar role with 136 wholesale markets; the city government sums it up as "Yiwu in the south, Linyi in the north".

The Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair) is held in Guangzhou every spring and autumn, in three phases. In autumn 2026, phase 1 (advanced manufacturing) ran from 15 to 19 October, phase 2 (home goods) from 23 to 27 October, and phase 3 (toys, clothing, shoes, bags, textiles, stationery, food) from 31 October to 4 November. The spring 2027 dates are not yet published; the spring 2026 session ran from 15 April to 5 May.

How do you verify a Chinese supplier?

Ask for the business licence (营业执照) and search its 18-character unified social credit code on gsxt.gov.cn, the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System run by the State Administration for Market Regulation. Check the registration status and whether the company appears on the list of abnormal operations.
Read the business scope (经营范围) printed on the licence: it lists the activities the company is registered for. If production is not among them, you are probably dealing with a trading company. That can work, as long as you know who you are paying.
Compare the registered address with the factory you are shown.
Visit the factory, or have it audited, before the first order.
Order samples, approve a pre-production sample and keep it as the reference.
Inspect the goods before shipment and pay the balance after the inspection report.
