In brief

The work permit authorises employment, the Z visa supports entry for work when required, and the residence permit authorises residence after arrival. Manage them as one chain rather than assuming one document replaces another.

The three documents in plain language

Each document answers a different question: may this person hold the job, may they enter China for that purpose, and may they remain in China during the employment period?

DocumentPurposeMain timing
Notification and work permitAuthorises the specific employmentNotification before entry, finalisation after arrival
Z visaSupports entry for employmentBefore travel where this route applies
Work residence permitSupports lawful residenceAfter arrival

Why the employer leads the process

This is not an individual tourist-style application. The Chinese employer justifies the role, provides company documents, coordinates with the local authority and keeps the employment contract, remuneration, tax and social obligations aligned.

  • The employer confirms that the entity and role can support the application.
  • The applicant supplies qualification, experience and personal records.
  • Both parties agree a timeline that fits the intended start date.
  • After arrival, the employer tracks local filings and renewal dates.

Categories A, B and C

Classification reflects the applicant's qualifications, experience, role and local criteria. It affects the review route and evidence required. It should be determined from the real profile, not selected as a preference.

Before certifying documents

Confirm the intended category and exact evidence list first. This avoids authenticating a degree or employment record in a format the local authority will not accept.

The route from outside China

  1. Review the applicant, role, contract and employer entity.
  2. Prepare personal and employer documents.
  3. Apply for the work-permit notification.
  4. Use the notification to obtain the appropriate entry visa.
  5. Enter China and register temporary accommodation.
  6. Finalise the work permit.
  7. Apply for the work-type residence permit within the applicable period.

Thirty to forty-five working days can be an initial reference, but criminal records, certification, translation, consular appointments and corrections can add time. Build the schedule from document availability, not from the preferred flight date.

Can the application be made in China?

Some profiles and entry statuses may support an in-country conversion, but this is not universal. Confirm the person's eligibility, the city's current practice and the remaining lawful stay before relying on this route.

Renewals and changes after approval

A change of employer, position, passport or address may require an update or new application. Work authorisation is an ongoing compliance process, not a one-time entry task.

  • Track passport, work-permit and residence-permit expiry together.
  • Report changes before implementation where required.
  • Keep accommodation, employment, tax and social-security records.
  • Avoid travel plans during periods when the passport must remain with an authority.

“The objective is not simply to obtain a visa. It is to maintain uninterrupted permission to enter, work and reside.”
